The story behind your bill

We think our water is wonderful. It’s the shower that wakes us up and the comforting cuppa that gives us that “ahhh” feeling after a long day.

We cook with it… grow our gardens with it… it’s an important part of our everyday lives.

We make our water wonderful

Every time you pay your water bill, it covers much more than just the cost of cleaning the water you use and the wastewater we take away. It goes towards looking after the massive networks that serve you, building for the future, and caring for environment we’re plumbed into.

Every day, we provide around 2 billion litres of clean tap water and take away over 3 billion litres of wastewater. Behind the scenes, we’re working hard 24 hours a day, on a network of pipes over 130,000 km long, with thousands of pumping and treatment stations across your region. At the same time, we’re investing for the future, to make sure we can keep on doing all of this while protecting the places where we live.

Why your water bill is higher

It can be worrying to see bills going up, so we want to explain why it’s happening and, importantly, what you’re getting from the increase.

Every five years, we agree detailed plans with Ofwat, our regulator, which show what we need to do to provide the best service and invest in the networks that serve you and other customers. Based on their decisions, we set your water bills to be fair and transparent.

We’re making major improvements that will secure your water supply for decades to come, while protecting the environment, and supporting the communities where customers like you live.

We have a track record of keeping our customers’ bills low and right now we have the second lowest bill in England. That’s something we want to continue over the years to come. However, to cover rising costs and continue making the biggest investments for our customers and communities, we are increasing bills gradually over the next five years. Rest assured, we will make sure your water services remain affordable and of the highest quality.

Looking back and looking forward

We want to share what we’ve been doing, and what we have planned, for you, your communities and of course, our wonderful water.

Behind your water bill

Frequently asked questions

Nobody likes to see bills rise. But over the next five years Severn Trent customers like you are going to see one of the biggest ever investment into our water, the infrastructure that serves you, your community, and the environment around us. The amount we’re investing is the equivalent of more than £3,000 for every household we serve.

To do this, we need to gradually increase bills over the next five years. Your bills are currently among the lowest in England – a position we want to continue. And there’ll be plenty of help available for anyone who can’t afford their bills.

Every five years, water companies like us send our business plans to Ofwat, our regulator. These plans outline where we need to spend to provide the services you want. Ofwat then decides how much funding we need to deliver these services and ensures our charges are fair. Based on Ofwat’s decision, we set your water bills.

Importantly, our plans are based on what customers like you told us they wanted. We spoke to more than 70,000 Severn Trent customers about our plans, which got an 81% approval rating from them.

Some of the things you’ll get in return include:

  • Enough water for our growing population and future generations.

  • An industry leading financial support package to help one in six households, so no one has to worry about paying their bill.

  • Replacing 865 miles of pipes, enough to stretch from Birmingham to Berlin, to ensure water is available 24/7 and to reduce leaks.

  • A massive reduction in our impact on rivers .

  • Supporting local community groups and charities with £10 million in grants through our Community Fund.

Your bill increase might not match the average percentage increase because everyone’s situation is unique. Here are some reasons why:

  • Water Meter: Whether you have a water meter or not.

  • Water usage: How much water your household uses (if you’re on a water meter).

  • Billing time: The time of year you receive your bill.
