Meet the River Rangers
Severn Trent’s 10 River Rangers came into post in January 2022 and have been working on the ground to care for local rivers ever since.
Each team look after their own area across the Severn Trent region, dedicated to protecting local rivers and helping them to thrive. And while we don’t own these local rivers, we recognise that we have an important role to play in improving river health.
Their day-to-day tasks include vital operational, monitoring and sampling activities that allow us to better understand the quality of these rivers, and what we can do to protect and improve them.
They also work closely with local organisations and partners that focus on cleaning up rivers, improving river health and boosting biodiversity along stretches of the Midland’s rivers. As well as educating customers on not flushing wipes or sanitary products, to prevent them from reaching rivers.

In addition to our River Ranger team, we launched our Get River Positive commitments in March 2022, to provide a clear and actionable response to calls for a revival of rivers in England.
We understand that what we do as a business should never be the reason for unhealthy rivers. So, as part of these commitments, we’re promising that by 2030 our storm overflow operations will never be the reason for rivers being classified as unhealthy.
We believe we are currently responsible for 14%* of the reasons for rivers not achieving good ecological status, where we operate, with the remaining 86% of reasons attributed to other sources and sectors.
* Based on our assessment of data downloaded in August 23 and using all classifications of certainty.
