Event Duration Monitoring
How accurate is EDM data?
As with all process monitoring equipment, EDM monitor accuracy can be affected by a number of factors:
- The waste water overflow chambers where monitors are installed can often be rapidly changing environments, especially in severe weather conditions. Debris, foaming, flooded chambers and wildlife intrusion can affect the accuracy of monitors.
- Monitors rely heavily on mobile data network connectivity. In areas where mobile signal is poor a visit to the discharge site may be required to manually download any recorded data. A further difficulty of this is that some monitors are installed in difficult to access environments that may require major road closures, managed entry into confined space or access issues that need careful planning to reduce the risk to operations and maintenance teams.
- EDM monitors only record flow depth and level data, they do not record any water quality data or spill volumes. It would be expected that discharges via this route would typically be much more diluted because of the high proportion of rainwater.
