Brand new pipes for Melton Mowbray

Severn Trent has started the final part of its work to replace ageing water pipes in Melton Mowbray to make sure its customers’ taps and toilets keep working.
Sarah-Jayne O’Kane, from Severn Trent, explains: “We’ve been replacing water pipes across the town for a few months now, and we’re pleased to say that we’ve now started the final stage of our project in the Sherrard Street area of the town. This work is important because as water pipes get old, they can become weaker and crack, making them prone to bursts, and we want to make sure our customers’ water supply is always there.”
The company’s contract partner, Laing O’Rourke, is replacing the old cast iron pipes with new, more reliable, plastic ones. Work started on Monday (18 January) and is expected to last three weeks.
Sarah-Jayne said: “So we can carry out the work quickly and safely, we’ll be using a one way system along Sherrard Street, and the taxi rank will be moved temporarily to the parking bays opposite Sage Cross Street. Pedestrians will be able to use the pavement, however there may be short periods during the working day, when they may have to wait for the team to finish their activity to allow them to pass safely.
“We’ll do all we can to help minimise disruption and we’d like to ask the local community for their patience until the new pipes are in place. We’ll continue to work closely with local businesses to make sure we don’t cause them too much inconvenience.”
