Hixon residents invited to learn more about £7.6 million sewage treatment works upgrade
16th April 2024
Residents living near the village of Hixon are being invited to a drop-in session to learn more about the ongoing £7.6m project to improve the Hixon sewage treatment works.
A team from Severn Trent will be on hand at the event to talk residents through the plans, and how the upgrades will benefit the community.
The drop-in session will be held on Wednesday 24th April 2024 from 3pm – 6pm at Girlguiding Staffordshire, St Peters School Site, Church Lane, Hixon, Stafford, ST18 0PS.
This is the latest project to improve the water and wastewater networks in Staffordshire.
Kay Gill, Community Communications Officer at Severn Trent, said: “These community drop-in sessions are a fantastic opportunity for local people to come and meet our team and learn more about our ongoing works. They also give us the chance to learn more about the local area and understand any concerns that the community might have.
“In the last three decades we've invested over £12 billion in improving the sewage treatment system across our operational area. This project is just part of the £100m that we spend every year on our sewage network, improving systems, reducing sewer flooding and pollutions and installing more monitoring capability.”
Part of the works will involve the relocation of the outfall which sends water which has been through the treatment process back to the environment, from Moreton Brook to the River Trent.
Kay said: “While final effluent is water that has gone through our treatment process, it may still contain some trace chemicals, so by moving the outfall to a larger watercourse – like the River Trent – we can minimise any potential impact.
“This creates a better, more vibrant wildlife habitat in the brook and means that there is less likely to be flooding during heavy rain.”
The works commenced in Oct 2023 and are due for completion by 15th December 2024.
