Midlands water company Severn Trent has officially opened its brand new £3 million laboratory in Church Wilne.

The company has built a brand new laboratory, which is located just off the M1, to carry out a full range of testing services and analysis across the company’s region.

Shaun Dowen, water regulations and public health lead at Severn Trent, said: “We’re really excited to be officially opening the new laboratories, and believe we’ve created a brilliant, modern environment for our teams to work in.

“We’ve made the labs bigger and upgraded our equipment, so we can now bring all our sampling and microbiological analysis in the East Midlands under one roof, enabling continuous improvement in the service we deliver for our customers.”

The Church Wilne laboratory is the company’s main microbiology testing site, employing more than 40 people who carry out around 200,000 tests a year.

The specialised accredited laboratory, carries out testing against a number of criteria to make sure that the wonderful water supplied to millions of customers is of a suitably high standard.

“The labs have been designed to deliver high performance efficiently,” adds Shaun. “They play a crucial role in ensuring the purity and quality of our customers’ drinking water, meaning everyone can rely on us to provide them with a water supply they can trust.”

Marcus Rink, Chief Inspector at the Drinking Water Inspectorate, who attended the opening said: “I welcome Severn Trent’s investment in this new facility which will provide opportunities for high quality skilled jobs and strengthens the capacity for the scientific analysis of samples that lies at the heart of consumer confidence and protection of public health.”
