Severn Trent joins international race to zero campaign
Thursday 14th January 2021
Severn Trent is one of the first water companies in the UK to sign up to an international Race to Zero campaign, pledging to deliver a net zero water supply for customers by 2030.
Led by the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), the water and waste company has joined other companies from around the world to rally leadership across businesses, cities, regions and investors for a healthy, resilient and zero carbon recovery.
Severn Trent has signed up under the umbrella of industry trade body Water UK, building on the environmental plans it announced last year, including its Triple Carbon Pledge of net zero emissions, 100% energy from renewable sources, and a 100% electric fleet by 2030.
James Jesic, Customer Operations Director at Severn Trent, said: “We’re extremely proud to be one of the first water companies in the UK to sign up to the Race to Zero campaign, joining like-minded companies from around the world to make a real difference.
“This campaign is the perfect fit for us, building on the great work we’ve already been doing to deliver a net zero water supply for our customers by 2030. We believe initiatives like this can make a real difference to the environment, as well as for people and the communities we serve.”
Over the past five years, Severn Trent has self-generated more than 50% of its own energy needs from renewable sources, reduced net carbon emissions by 40% and invested £350m in improving a third of the rivers in its region.
The company has also committed to plant 1.3m trees and revive 5,000 hectares of land as part of its plan to reach net zero by 2030.
