Water Resources West (WRW), of which Severn Trent is a partner, has appointed Dan Rogerson as its independent Chair.

The former water minister will oversee the development of a long term water resources strategy for the North West of England, the Midlands and the cross-border catchments with Wales.

WRW is one of five regional groups across England and Wales, bringing together local abstractors, their representatives and regulators. Over the next three years WRW will be developing a plan to ensure sustainable and resilient water supplies, working across sectors and taking account of wider societal needs and environmental improvements.

Mr Rogerson commented: “Never has there been a more important time to face up to the water supply challenges posed by climate change, economic growth, population increases and the pressures on our natural environment. We need to start making decisions about water efficiency, the development of new water sources and how we can better work together for a sustainable water strategy into the second half of this century and beyond.”

Mr Rogerson was Minister for Water, Forestry, Rural Affairs and Resource Management between 2013 and 2015, during which time he oversaw some of the biggest changes for the UK water industry since privatisation, including taking the Water Act 2014 through Parliament.

He also worked with communities and agencies affected by flooding and helped negotiate for the introduction of the new Flood Re body, which aims to provide affordable flood insurance to householders.

He currently holds non-executive directorships at Plymouth CAST (a multi-academy schools trust) and Continal Ltd and he is Chair of the Wessex Water Partnership.
